Here’s what you need to do if you are recruiting a new volunteer:
- Application
Ask the volunteer to complete the Leaders & Volunteers Application for Child-related Roles if they will be volunteering with children. This form collects the information required for screening volunteers in child-related roles eg. Playgroup or Sunday School. Or ask the volunteer to complete the Leaders & Volunteers Application for non-Child-related Roles eg. Gardening or Op Shop. - Interview
All Volunteers must undergo screening which includes an interview. The interview is a conversation with the Volunteer based on their answers to the questions on their Application form. If the Volunteer wishes to work with children, it is important that you are clear about their motivation to work with children.
At the interview the Volunteer must provide the following information before they commence their role:
– A completed Safe Leaders and Volunteers Agreement
– A Working with Children Clearance
– A Signed Statement of Personal Commitment
– Agree with the Lay Leaders Code of Conduct for members of the Uniting Church
– A National Police Check for all Child-related roles - Reference Checks
Contact the Volunteer’s referees as listed on the Application Form. If the Volunteer is applying to work with children, ask the Referee if they are aware of any reason that may affect their ability to work with children. - Documented by Church Council
After completing the interview and reference checks a decision must be made regarding the person’s suitability of the role. If deemed suitable, formally appoint the person to the role and document the appointment in the Church Council minutes, recording the date in the Safe Ministry Compliance Tool. - Safe Ministry Training
All Volunteers are required to undertake 2 yearly Safe Church Training. When completed, record the training date on the Safe Ministry Compliance Tool.
